Do You REALLY Want It? (Or Do You Just Like the Idea?)

Everybody says they want something.

A business. A better body. A sober life. A relationship that doesn’t feel like a slow death by a thousand resentments. A team that actually performs. Confidence. Peace. Momentum.

People squawk about what they want like volume equals commitment.

Then it’s time to do the hard sh*t.

And suddenly the excuses show up like they’ve been waiting in the parking lot.

The Question That Exposes Everything

Do you really want it?

Not “do you like the idea of it.” Not “do you want the dopamine hit of talking about it.” Not “do you want the identity of being the kind of person who wants it.”

Do you want it enough to pay the price?

Because real change has a cover charge. And it’s not cheap.

“I Don’t Have Time” Is Usually Code for “It’s Not a Priority”

Let’s address the favorite lie.

“I don’t have time.”

Dude… you’ve got time.

You’ve got time for scrolling. Time for Netflix. Time for another drink. Time for gossip. Time for staying busy doing sh*t that looks productive but doesn’t move your life one inch.

Time isn’t your problem.

Your priorities are.

If you keep telling yourself you don’t have time, you get to keep your habits. You get to keep your comfort. You get to keep your excuses. And you get to keep your results.

That’s the trade.

Your Results Are Not Random

Here’s the part people hate.

The results you’re getting right now are perfectly aligned with:

  • How you live

  • What you tolerate

  • What you avoid

  • What you repeat

  • What you prioritize

So if you’re not happy with the results, stop acting surprised.

You’re not being punished. You’re being reflected.

Your life is giving you the receipt for your choices.

Want Different Results? Make Different Choices (Yeah, It’s That Simple)

Not easy. Simple.

Different results require different behavior.

That means:

  • Putting down the bottle

  • Taking your ass to the gym instead of hitting snooze

  • Having the hard conversation instead of numbing out

  • Doing the work when you don’t feel like it

  • Saying “no” to the sh*t that keeps you stuck

And here’s the kicker: you don’t get to keep the old habits and demand new outcomes.

That’s not how reality works.

The Real Problem: You Want Change Without Discomfort

Most people don’t actually want change.

They want relief.

They want the payoff without the process. They want confidence without the reps. They want trust without the honesty. They want results without the sacrifice.

But the process is the point.

Real change comes from doing hard things—consistently. From being uncomfortable on purpose. From challenging the version of you that keeps choosing the easy button.

A Strategy That Isn’t Overdone: The “Trade List”

Here’s something practical you can do today that isn’t the same recycled “set goals and visualize” nonsense.

Make a Trade List.

Not a to-do list. A trade list.

Because every meaningful change requires you to trade something you’re currently doing for something better.

Step 1: Write the result you say you want

Pick one. Not ten.

Examples:

  • “I want to get sober.”

  • “I want to lose 30 pounds.”

  • “I want to save my marriage.”

  • “I want to lead like an adult.”

Step 2: Write what you’re currently protecting

Be honest.

  • Comfort

  • Sleep-in time

  • Avoiding conflict

  • Your addiction

  • Your ego

  • Your victim story

Step 3: Write the trade you must make

This is where the truth lives.

Examples:

  • Trade “drinking to decompress” for “feeling sh*tty for a while and learning real coping skills.”

  • Trade “hitting snooze” for “being tired and doing it anyway.”

  • Trade “keeping the peace” for “having the conversation that might blow things up.”

  • Trade “being liked” for “being respected.”

Step 4: Choose one non-negotiable action for 14 days

Not forever. Fourteen days.

One action. Every day.

  • Walk 30 minutes.

  • No alcohol.

  • Protein + water before coffee.

  • One hard conversation.

  • One leadership expectation clarified.

Then track it. Don’t journal your feelings about it—track whether you did it.

Because the goal isn’t motivation.

The goal is proof.

Proof that you’re the kind of person who does what they said they’d do.

If You’re Not Willing to Pay the Price, Stop Announcing the Dream

This is the part that’ll sting.

If you’re not willing to leave your crappy choices behind… If you’re not willing to get uncomfortable… If you’re not willing to do the work…

Then you don’t really want change.

You want the fantasy.

So stop screaming about what you want while you keep choosing the exact habits that guarantee you won’t get it.

Pick one:

  • Comfort now

  • Or results later

You don’t get both.

Call to Action

If you’re ready to stop talking and start moving, do this today:

  1. Write your Trade List (result → what you’re protecting → the trade).

  1. Pick your one non-negotiable action for the next 14 days.

  1. Send me a message or reply to this post with the words: “I’m doing the trade.”

And then do it.

No more speeches. No more excuses.

Just work.
